Simple Accounting as an Informal Governance Mechanism in Rural Community-Based Tourism Homestays

This study examines how simple accounting functions as an informal governance mechanism in community-based tourism homestay management. Using an interpretive qualitative approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observation, and document analysis involving twelve homestay operators in Kalisoro Tourism Village, Central Java, Indonesia. The findings indicate that simple accounting practices improve recording discipline, support the separation of business and household finances, and generate reliable structured financial information for operational and strategic decision-making. Beyond technical functions, simple accounting enhances transparency, strengthens stakeholder accountability, and facilitates collective management within community-based tourism enterprises. By institutionalizing routine financial documentation, these practices contribute to operational control, planning capacity, and long-term business sustainability. The study demonstrates that context-adapted financial management practices function not merely as administrative tools but as governance mechanisms in rural tourism micro-enterprises. These findings highlight the role of simple accounting in strengthening governance and sustainability in tourism villages.

The Distinctiveness of "Gandeng Gendong" BALKONDES: A Critical Ethnographic Investigation of Community-Based Tourism Governance in the Borobudur Heritage Area

This study investigates the "Gandeng Gendong" (mutual support) strategy within the Village Economic Centres (BALKONDES) programme in the Borobudur heritage area as an innovative model of Community-Based Tourism (CBT). Drawing on eight months of critical ethnographic fieldwork across 20 BALKONDES in 20 villages of Borobudur District, Magelang Regency, Central Java, the research examines how communities construct meaning around collaborative tourism governance and how socio-economic transformation unfolds through centripetal and centrifugal mechanisms. Findings reveal that the "Gandeng Gendong" strategy, rooted in Javanese gotong royong (collective mutual aid), successfully creates a dual-level collaborative ecosystem: internal mechanisms that empower local communities within individual villages, and external mechanisms that foster inter-village resource sharing and collective marketing. Performance analysis of the 20 BALKONDES identifies three cluster typologies: Advanced, Developing, and Less Developed, shaped by leadership quality, community social capital, geographic accessibility, and state-owned enterprise (BUMN) support intensity. Despite meaningful achievements in livelihood diversification and social capital reconstruction, the model confronts significant sustainability challenges, particularly structural dependency on external corporate patronage and persistent tensions between collaborative solidarity and competitive market incentives. The study proposes a theoretical model of "Gandeng Gendong Distinctiveness" as a distinctive network-based CBT governance paradigm that integrates traditional Javanese values with contemporary institutional arrangements, offering transferable lessons for heritage tourism destinations across Southeast Asia.

Analysis of Social Media Management Strategies: A Case Study of Bekelir Tourist Village

Bekelir Tourism Village is a community-based destination that has successfully transformed from a slum area into a thematic village with colorful mural identities. However, the number of tourist visits declined in 2021–2024 because social media management was not optimal. The research problem formulation is how the social media condition of Bekelir Tourism Village is and what the management strategy is. This study aims to formulate effective social media management strategies to support sustainable tourism promotion. The research method uses a qualitative approach with techniques such as interviews, observation, documentation, SWOT analysis, and POAC (Planning, Organizing, Actuating, Controlling) strategy implementation. There were 9 respondents in this study. The results show that Bekelir Tourism Village has strengths in the form of unique mural identity, community support, and strategic location, but faces weaknesses in the form of limited human resources and lack of content consistency. The implementation of POAC can be a solution through content planning, team organization, digital training, and continuous promotion monitoring.

These results provide valuable insights for nightclub managers in enhancing the quality of visitor experiences, strengthening the attractiveness of nightlife destinations, and enriching the understanding of social and cultural dynamics within the nightlife context.

Strengthening the Multiplier Effect Through Local Community Involvement: A Case Study of the Jatiluwih Festival, Bali

This study investigates the role of local community participation in enhancing both the economic and cultural impacts of the Jatiluwih Festival. It seeks to understand how engagement in planning, decision-making, and implementation processes can strengthen economic circulation while fostering cultural pride and sustainability. The research adopts a sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach. Quantitative surveys provide insights into local spending patterns and multiplier effects, while qualitative interviews with government officials, private sector representatives, and community members enrich the analysis with perspectives on heritage preservation, product promotion, and social cohesion. Findings demonstrate that community participation significantly amplifies economic benefits for households and microenterprises, particularly in the culinary sector, and reinforces cultural identity. Government support through regulation, infrastructure, and youth training, together with private sector contributions such as sponsorship and digital branding, serve as key catalysts for sustaining competitiveness. Despite limitations in sample size and scope, the research affirms the festival’s potential to be developed as a model for sustainable, culture-based tourism.

Paon Bali: A Culinary and Local Cultural Education Facility base on Community-Based Tourism

The research aim to determine the appeal of Paon Bali in cooking class activities, especially in introducing traditional Balinese food in terms of ingredients, cooking techniques, and moral values.The research uses descriptive qualitative methodology. This study used a qualitative descriptive method, collecting data through in-depth interviews with two experts to explain the layout of Paon Bali and religious matters. To complete the data of 30 respondents from internal students, guests from outside the campus, and guests from abroad (Tiongkok, South Korea and Malaysia) assisted in evaluating the cooking class activities at Paon Bali. Observations were conducted at each activity at Paon Bali, and documentation was obtained from several books and article on Balinese culture. The findings highlight that the cooking class learning at Paon Bali is very helpful in preserving Balinese culture in the field of traditional culinary arts.

Gastrodiplomacy as a Strategy for Strengthening Indonesian Cuisine in the Philippines: Opportunities and Challenges

Gastrodiplomacy has become an important instrument in modern cultural diplomacy to strengthen nation branding through culinary arts. This study analyzes the potential of gastrodiplomacy as a strategy to strengthen the image of Indonesian food in the Philippines through culinary tourism and hospitality approaches. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive method by collecting data from recent journal literature and analyzing various gastrodiplomacy initiatives undertaken by Indonesia. The results show that the Philippines is a potential market for Indonesian culinary promotion given its geographical proximity, cultural similarities, and increasing consumer interest in authentic food. The Wonderful Indonesia, Indonesia Spice Up The World, Wonderful Indonesia Gourmet (WIG) Co-Branding Program, and the launch of the WISH 2025 "Gastronomy Tour Package" catalog have demonstrated significant success in building a positive image. However, a more comprehensive strategy is needed, including collaboration with the tourism sector, hospitality human resource training, and the use of digital technology to maximize the impact of gastrodiplomacy. In conclusion, gastrodiplomacy through culinary tourism is an effective soft power to enhance Indonesia's nation branding and open economic opportunities in the Philippines

The Influence of Service Quality and Business Communication on Customer Retention at Hayujalan Tour & Event

This study aims to analyze the influence of service quality and business communication on customer retention at Hayujalan Tour and Event as a tourism service provider. The study employs a quantitative approach using a survey method by distributing questionnaires to customers who have previously used the company’s services. The research sample consisted of 77 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression to examine the influence of independent variables on the dependent variable. The results show that service quality does not have a significant partial effect on customer retention, while business communication has a positive and significant influence on customer retention. Furthermore, the simultaneous test indicates that service quality and business communication together have a significant effect on customer retention. These findings suggest that effective business communication plays an important role in building long term relationships with customers and encouraging the continued use of tourism services. The contribution of this study highlights the importance of strengthening integrated business communication strategies alongside service quality in order to improve customer retention in the tourism service industry.

This study aims to examine the development of ecotourism in Indonesia through a bibliometric approach based on national and international publications. The urgency of this research lies in the pivotal role of ecotourism as a form of sustainable tourism that not only contributes to environmental preservation but also promotes local community empowerment and economic well-being. As global attention toward sustainability increases, ecotourism has emerged as a strategic topic in academic literature. However, a comprehensive and systematic mapping of ecotourism research using reputable scientific databases is still lacking. Therefore, this study focuses on mapping publication trends, identifying key authors, institutions, and countries, as well as exploring dominant themes and keywords in ecotourism literature. This research employs a qualitative approach through Systematic Literature Review (SLR) and bibliometric analysis of ecotourism publications in Indonesia from 2010 to 2025. Data were collected from Scopus, Web of Science, Garuda, and Google Scholar to map publication trends, author collaborations, and dominant themes using co-occurrence keyword analysis. Inclusion criteria were established to ensure article relevance, limited to journal and conference publications within the 2010–2025 period. The results are expected to provide theoretical contributions by offering a comprehensive mapping of ecotourism literature and practical implications in the form of recommendations for academics, researchers, and policymakers to direct ecotourism studies toward more strategic and relevant areas. Consequently, this research not only highlights Indonesia’s position within the global literature landscape but also opens opportunities for collaboration and strengthens future ecotourism research

Model for Strengthening Homestays based on Traditional Houses in the Development of Community-Based Tourism in the Gebong Memarong Tourism Village

This study aims to develop a model for strengthening traditional house-based homestays within the framework of community-based tourism (CBT) in the Gebong Memarong tourist village. The traditional houses of the oldest tribe in Bangka are positioned as assets with the potential to become community-based accommodations. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation with thematic analysis. The results of this study indicate that homestay strengthening is carried out through three main pillars: increasing human resource capacity, optimizing cultural and environmental values, and strengthening community-based governance through multi-stakeholder collaboration. Traditional houses also function as cultural interpretations that enrich the tourist experience. The main challenges include limited infrastructure, human resource capacity, and access to digital promotion. Therefore, sustainable cross-sector collaboration is needed. This study offers a conceptual model for integrating traditional houses in the development of community-based homestays that can be replicated in other tourist villages.

Travel Patterns for Nature Tourism at Lake Aek Natonang Samosir Regency

This study identifies the attraction of Lake Aek Natonang tourist attractions and creates a Travel Pattern to make it easier for tourists to go to Lake Aek Natonang. The data collection techniques in this study were through observation, interviews, and documentation studies, then analyzed using a descriptive qualitative method to understand the characteristics and patterns of Lake Aek Natonang tourist trips. The results of the study show that the tourist attraction of Lake Aek Natonang is in the form of natural beauty that is still preserved, supporting facilities, and tourist activities such as fishing, hiking, and camping. In addition, the recommended travel pattern is the Destination Region Loop, where the movement of tourists begins with a route around other destinations. After completing the tour in a circular (circular pattern), tourists return to their place of origin via the shortest route between the main destination and the place of departure origin. This pattern makes it easier for tourists to enjoy various interesting destinations around the lake while optimizing the tourist experience through efficient and attractive routes. These findings provide valuable insights for local governments and tourism managers to develop strategic, well-integrated tour packages that boost regional tourism competitiveness.

SMK Link and Match South Tangerang Strategy to Produce Competent Human Resources/Graduates in the Hotel Industry

This research aims to analyze and obtain the right strategy for developing a creative and innovative learning curriculum at SMK Link and Match, which will produce competent human resources and graduates to support the tourism sector in South Tangerang. This study uses a qualitative approach with the SWOT Analysis method through the stages of IFAS, EFAS, IE, and Cartesian diagrams. The data collection technique was carried out by conducting direct observations in the field and unstructured interviews with 8 informants, ranging from students, principals, productive teachers, heads of administration, alumni, and HR Trembessi Hotel as external parties who could strengthen statements in the research. Based on the grand strategy matrix results, SMK Link and Match have alternative strategies that can be applied to face increasingly fierce competition. One alternative strategy is to take advantage of the strengths and opportunities that exist, which can minimize the weaknesses and threats that its graduates will face.

Optimizing Guest Satisfaction Through Room Attendant Service Excellence: Evidence from FOX Hotel Pekanbaru

This study aims to examine the role of room attendants in ensuring the cleanliness of guest rooms at Fox Hotel Pekanbaru and to assess guest satisfaction with the hotel’s room hygiene standards. Data was collected from 105 respondents (8 room attendants and 97 guests), with sample calculations using the Lemeshow formula. Observation and questionnaires were used as data collection techniques. Data were analyzed using a descriptive quantitative approach supplemented by qualitative insights to evaluate the implementation of SERVQUAL dimensions across the housekeeping department. Guest satisfaction was measured using a 5-point Likert scale (scores 1–5) and systematically grouped based on class interval ranges. Daily tasks include preparing trolleys with the necessary equipment, cleaning rooms in accordance with SOPs, and handling rooms with late check-outs. In terms of communication, Room Attendants receive instructions from supervisors, conduct shift handover procedures, report room status, and notify guests of any items left behind. Meanwhile, in terms of supervision, they ensure that guest amenities and cleaning supplies are used efficiently and in accordance with established standards. From the questionnaire distributed to 97 guest respondents, an average score of 4.77 was obtained, which falls into the “very satisfied” category according to the five-point Likert scale. This finding indicates that the role and performance of Room Attendants directly contribute to creating a comfortable stay experience and are an important factor in maintaining service standards at Fox Hotel Pekanbaru

This study aims to analyze the strategic role of competency assessors in maintaining the objectivity of competency certification based on the Indonesian National Work Competency Standards (SKKNI) at the First-Party Professional Certification Body (LSP P1) of Sahid Polytechnic in the era of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC). This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The informants consisted of 12 competency assessors, 2 LSP P1 administrators, and 5 certification candidates selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and document analysis, and analyzed thematically using source and technique triangulation to ensure data credibility.The findings highlight the importance of assessor professionalism, integrity, and consistent certification governance in ensuring objectivity, and provide strategic insights for strengthening the quality of competency certification in vocational education.
